Animate distortion

- [Narrator] We're moving on to a new class of Boris Continuum effects, and those are warping effects. And warping effects can distort an image by moving pixels. Or they can distort time where you can change a speed on a piece of footage. We'll start with image distortion. I have project three-one open. In here I've gone back to this version of the shot, where we color graded it to look more like daytime. I've also added fire stock footage on top and screened it. Perhaps you want to make a sci-fi shot, or a dream sequence. Might be nice to have a heatwave here, where the background looks like it's distorted from the heat of the fire. And do that with a warp effect. I'll start by copying the lowest layer, edit, duplicate. I'll move that to the top. I'll apply the warp effect to the top layer. Effect, warp, and we'll try turbulence. And you'll see a distortion. The turbulence effect distorts the image by looking at an underlying three-dimensional noise. Where the parts of the noise are bright, it moves the pixels further. Where parts of the noise are darker, it moves the pixels less. Can change the size of the noise and thereby the undulations through scale. I'll set the large value at 700. The intensity with which it moves the pixels is based on the intensity property. I'll try 300. There are some variations of the noise through noise type. We have bubbly here, there's also smooth, and stringy. I like bubbly. And notice as I change the properties the edges do not change. That's because the pin property is set to pin edges. The distortion is static, but we can make it move over time. We'll go to animation, and change the flow rate from zero to a higher value. Higher it is, the faster it moves. Lets start with 40. The direction it moves is based on flow direction. So I'll set this to zero, so it flows from down to up. Now in order to combine this with the lower layers, I can simply adjust the opacity. This will give us a heatwave type of effect where it's semi-transparent. 50. Now let's play it back. And there's nice distortion. Unfortunately the distortion is affecting her face. Be nice to minimize it in that area. Well here's a good place to tap back into pixel chooser. I'll expand that, turn it on, and this time instead of drawing my own mask or using Mocha, I'll use one of the pre-made shapes, expand mask, and set the shape menu. I'll try the egg shape. I don't see it here, I can go to the H-U-D and turn it on. And there is that red, egg mask. And click-drag in its center to move it. And click-drag the dots to change the horizontal and vertical size. I grab this blue handle here I can rotate it. Right now it's limiting the distortion to her face, but I can invert it. Invert mask. And then to the edge is in too hard of a transition, I'll increase the feather. And then I'll hide the H-U-D. I'll click off and let's play it back one last time. And there's our nice heatwave style effect using the turbulence effect through Boris Continuum.
