Change the time of day

- [Instructor] We're moving on to another set of Boris Continuum Effects, and those are the color effects. You can use color effects to apply a color correction, color grade, or even do things like change the apparent time of day and the mood of a shot. Let's give that a try. I have Project 2.1 open. We have a new shot with a model in front of a window, and she's in shadow. Now, it was probably shot during the daytime, as we can guess by the overexposed background, but she's in shadow, and overall the shot is very blue, feels very cold. So let's try to make it feel more like late afternoon and warmer. We can apply several color effects to achieve that. I'll select the layer and go to the color and tone menu, and here are the color effects. Let's start with the color balance. You can use this to alter the balance between red, green, and blue. So I can lower the amount of blue and therefore get more red and green. can also increase the amount of red and maybe green a tiny amount. Maybe further on red. Let's say 35 on red, five on green, and even less blue. Negative 40. So already it's feeling warmer and later in the day. It's a bit dim, however, so let's try to brighten the shot. We'll try another effect. Color and tone. Levels gamma. Gamma is based on a gamma curve, which affects the contrast of layer. If I raise gamma, it gets brighter. Let's try 1.3. If I do that, however, some of the dark areas are also lifted, so it appears a bit washed out. If we want to bring back the blacks, we can use input black. If I raise the slider, any pixel value with a value below this property value is pushed down to zero black. Let's try nine here. So now we have some of these shadow areas back and there's better contrast, even though overall it's brighter. Let's try one more. I'll collapse these. And as a third effect, we'll try hue sat lightness. And here I can raise the saturation to make the colors more intense. So yellows become more yellow. Let's try 22 here. And there we go. With the application of three Boris Continuum Color Effects, we've changed the apparent time of day, made it appear warmer, and changed the overall mood. Now, as you look at these various color effects, you'll notice that some of them share similar properties. For example, hue sat lightness has its own lightness slider, which affects the brightness. So you may need to experiment with which properties you'd like to use with which effects. There's no wrong answer here as long as you get a nice final result. Let's see what else we can do with color effects.
