- [Nigel] Hi, I'm Nigel French, welcome to Type Tips. Glyph guides are a timely addition to the precision tools that we already have available in Adobe illustrator. Prior to glyph guides, if I wanted to size, or align this shape relative to the type to its cap height, or ascender height, or its X height, or its baseline I would have needed to draw ruler guides first for precision. Of course, that's time consuming. But, now, with glyph guides, making sure that they are on, making sure too that smart guides are turned on, the process is much easier. Just before I go ahead and do this I'm going to press cmd or ctrl + T to bring up the character panel where we see all of the different glyph guides currently turned on. So, now, I can resize this element to the glyph bound, which in this case is the ascender height. Or I could go down a fraction if I wanted, and align it to the cap height.
