Hi, I'm Nigel French, welcome to Type Tips. This week a quick tip, about Automatic Kerning methods in Illustrator. There are two types of Automatic Kerning, which is the adjustment of space between the letter pairs and those two types are Metrics and Optical. Metrics uses the Kerning values that are part of the font, Optical is based on the Cliff shapes. I have recorded a movie about when one or other of those methods is preferable, you can see it here. In this movie, I just wanted to clear up any potential confusion arising from a third option, that is available only in Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop do not have this option. I'll come to the Character panel and the option I'm referring to is this one, Metrics-Roman only, the wording on this, I think is ambiguous.
