- [Nigel] Welcome to "Type Tips." I'm Nigel French. This week, five common problems that you may run into when using drop caps and their solutions. The first is when your opening character leaves you with a little bit of extra space on its left-hand side. This is, as we see here, likely to occur with an I, and the solution, well, we have two solutions. One is, if you're using optical margin alignment, then the problem is not going to occur. But some people don't like optical margin alignment. So, the other solution is to come to your drop caps. Now, in these examples, I'm going to access the drop caps options from the control panel menu. Typically, of course, you would access the options as part of a paragraph style, where you have exactly the same set of options. And here, I'm just going to check Align Left Edge.
