- [Nigel French] Hi, I'm Nigel French. Welcome to Type Tips. I'd like to share with you my experiments with using type and the Illustrator pattern maker. I warn you, this may seem a little restrictive, but sometimes it's useful to work within constraints. I have on my pasteboard four letters. On my swatches panel I have three pattern swatches. I'm about to make the fourth, and a color theme. Now, of course, I am aware that I could make a pattern that included all four of these letters, but I wanted to introduce an element of randomness into the equation. So I'm making four separate patterns, and I'm going to be overlapping them, and then experimenting with editing the pattern definition, and also the scaling and positioning of the pattern. To make my fourth pattern, I will select the letter and then just drag it onto my swatches panel. To edit the pattern swatch, I'll double click on it, but before I do, I'll just…
