Giving trees a typographic voice

- [Nigel] Hi, I'm Nigel French. Welcome to Type Tips. I'd like to tell you about a personal project that I did for my own amusement. I like type, obviously, and I also liked to photograph trees. I thought it would be interesting to combine the two. So I created a small book, an A to Zed of my favorite trees. I gave each one a name and I matched each tree with a typeface that I felt had similar characteristics. The type of graphic challenge here was to find letter forms that are a good fit with the shape and personality of the tree. And this is how it turned out. There are no right or wrong answers, but you instinctively know when something works. So I invite you to do something similar. It doesn't need to be trees. Just pick something you're interested in cars, buildings, shoes, fish, whatever. Photograph your subject and pair up each image with a typeface.
