- [Instructor] Welcome to Type Tips. Let's talk about stencil type faces. Stencil lettering has been around for centuries, but we tend to think of it as evoking a rough and ready urban look, all caps type sprayed on the side of amplifiers, or cargo boxes, or protests signs, or road markings. But stencil lettering has wider applications. In the 1920s, it was used to convey a modernity and the machine age. It can also have an art deco vibe. Stencil lettering can be graceful and it can be sophisticated. There's a good selection of stencil typefaces available on Adobe Fonts. But if you can't find what you're looking for, you can always make your own. So here I am starting out with a typeface called Filson Soft Bold and I've just drawn a series of rectangles over it.
