What is the Mapboards window?

- [Instructor] Once we're ready to start mapping, we need to access the Maps for Creative Cloud extension. And in both Illustrator and in Photoshop, you will find it in the window menu, and the extensions submenu. Now I'm going to be using Illustrator throughout this course. And if you were watching the previous chapter, you'll know that's because it gives me the most flexibility. So what I'm going to do here is choose ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud, and you sometimes get a sign-in window periodically. So you just have to sign in again, but I've already done that. What you get are these two windows. And you can dock them wherever you want or you can leave them floating. Now I frequently tab mine together between the two like so, but just for the purposes of this movie, I'm actually going to dock them side-by-side. So I can move them as one thing. In fact, I'll pretty much keep it that way for at least this chapter I think. So we can see why the two work so well together. So the mapboard is basically where we start our entire mapping journey. It's where we define all of our extents, where we create everything here that we're going to compile in this window here. Now you can see it's got a fairly limited tool set at the top, import and draw. We got this very helpful yellow bar here, which I really love because it makes these two kind of redundant to a large extent, up there like so. I can also access my account from here, so you can see I'm logged in as DesignNinja. I can manage that or logout from there as well. And of course this lovely mapboard in front of me. Now mine probably looks different to yours because the last thing I was drawing was in the LA area. You may well have a different view. And you can zoom in and out using these controls on the left hand side here. The small plus, and the small minus, and you can go right the way out if you want, until you can see the whole wide world, should you like. Now the dark gray canvas that I've got here by the way, is kind of the default base map. Now I'm not going to move the map just for the minute because I have this draw tool active. In fact, let me deactivate that just for a moment so I can drag in here. And here's the top tip for you. If the draw tool is active, you can hold down the space bar to do that as well. Just though as you might inside of Illustrator. And where I was just a moment ago, was telling you that if you don't want this particular map as your base map, I think it's very useful to have it that way in this window, you can change that using one of the different maps here. But to be honest, for me this is the one that I find most useful. There you go, that's the mapboards window. And in the next movie, I'm going to create a map extent within it.
