Features to look for in an external recorder

- So Rich, in my mind, the biggest benefit of using a digital recorder is the format flexibility. - Yeah, it's going to give you the option to really standardize things. So even though you're mixing cameras, you end up with one type of file. Now, that type of file is going to depend upon the brand of recorder or the features you buy, but most of these are available either giving you one or even several codecs. For example, you can unlock codecs and purchase just the ones you need. - Absolutely, and the thing again about this is that, instead of recording in a very heavily compressed, sometimes sort of not so great compression format, like H.264, might be a low bit rate format. Using one of these recorders, the biggest benefit is that you're recording to an edit-friendly codec that's much higher bit rate, and therefore much higher quality. In addition, things like sort of the color space and sort of the color depth that you'll have, 422 and 444, recorded on these recorders is going to…
