Lighting with LEDs

- Hi, my name's Rich Harrington. Welcome to this episode of Video Gear Weekly. And we have a special guest today, Director of Photography Jim Ball. Jim, how you doing? - Good, thanks for having me. - Excellent. And Jim, what sort of impact has LED lighting had on your cinematography? - Well, these days, lightweight, high-output, and just more versatility overall. - And we're actually on a set right now under LED lighting. My studio is not gigantic, and in the old days of studios, the lights would have to be 20, 30 feet up under the ceiling. Otherwise, you felt like you were melting, there was so much heat put off. And now, these are completely cool. - Well, that's a big plus, the comfortable temperature that these lights operate at is a big plus, especially when you're dealing with people that aren't used to being in front of lights. It can also affect their performance, so these lights that burn cool, provide that comfort and get that whole heat problem out of the way. - And that also leads to safety benefits with crew on set, you know. It's still a good idea to keep those leather gloves on set, and to be careful when handling lights, but there are much safer, and lots of benefits. So we've got a lot of cool things to cover. Let's dig in and explore LED lighting.
