- [Narrator] When the power goes out at my house, which happens every now and then, it usually means that I have to reset the clock on the microwave. But, if the power in your city goes out for a day, a week, or even longer, then you can have real problems. And while some of the things that cause these problems are beyond a city's control, such as hurricanes or earthquakes, there are many, many other things that can be predicted and even controlled. In the case of a city's power grid, that's going to include things like the age of infrastructure, maintenance records, seasonal demands for electricity, and neighborhood developments. Data like power outages and calls to the city as well as unusual spikes and demand or imminent storms can also be used to predict the short-term problems and give an agile city time to respond.
