- [Narrator] Bicycle accidents in San Francisco are a serious problem. The city reported in 2016 that every year in San Francisco about 30 people lose their lives and over 200 more are seriously injured while traveling on city streets. But, instead of jumping straight into a program where they would change everything, everywhere all at once, the City of San Francisco first decided to see where the accidents were most likely to occur. This is a shot from their project website, and it shows a serious concentration of injuries. In fact, a mere 12% of the intersections in San Francisco were the sources of 70% of the major injuries. That meant that the city could focus its efforts for maximum effect. What the city of San Francisco did then was propose the creation of quote, protected intersections, in the areas of greatest risk.
