- [Instructor] The story of exceptional students is the story of life out in the tails of the distributions. And when we're talking about exceptionality, we're referring to a few different things that may seem to be opposites but they actually have a lot of things that are important in common, and that data science can help with, in common. They are first the gifted and talented students who have unusually profound abilities in certain domains. There are also students with disabilities of many different kinds and as one very important subgroup of students with disabilities, are students with specific learning disabilities. I'll say a couple of things about each of these real fast. First off, gifted and talented students. Well, the definition depends a little bit on who you're talking to, but the Marland Report was published in 1972. And it describes several categories of potential giftedness.
