Data science and social justice

- On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks, pictured here with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the background, refused to give up her seat in racially segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This small act was a critical step in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and ultimately contributed to important changes in laws in the US. It also serves as a reminder that the flow of power between governments and citizens goes both ways. And while this course is primarily focused on the role of governments, citizens can also have tremendous influence, especially when it comes to issues of social justice, and data science can contribute to those efforts as well. So how can data science relate to social justice? I can think of three main ways. Number one is, data science is very useful for documenting unseen conditions that should be addressed as issues of social justice.
