Ethical challenges in educational data
- [Instructor] Data science brings a lot of exciting possibilities in educational research as elsewhere, but it also has some major ethical challenges that need to be confronted with a clear mind and a deliberate intent. There are three major challenges to data science in education, and truthfully, these are variations on the same challenges that data science has anywhere. They are privacy, the potential for bias, and issues of transparency, and I'll talk about each of these in turn. First off, privacy is the best known and really a perpetual challenge in any tech related field that deals with data. Of course, anybody who's out in the world knows that major tech companies really are plagued by privacy problems. A lot of these are self-created. They share their data inappropriately, or they do things with the data that people would not approve of.
