- [Instructor] The Suneung exam is South Korea's eight-hour long collegiate scholastic ability test, or a CSAT, that is administered simultaneously to 600,000 students in November. This is a high-stakes test. Students and their families believe that it's critical in determining which university they will attend and, by extension, their professional life thereafter. South Korea takes this very seriously. Airplanes are grounded and re-routed to reduce noise, businesses open late to reduce traffic, protestors pause their demonstrations, and the police will even escort students who are running late. High-stakes exams in the United States tend to take a slightly different approach. We have exams, for instance, on the Common Core and TerraNova, or the International Baccalaureate degree that a number of high schools award, as well as the college entrance exams, the SAT, taken by 1.7 million students a year, or the ACT, taken by nearly two million students a year.
