Giving feedback
- Now I want to talk about something that isn't taught in design school so much. Again it's more likely something taught in elementary school, and yet in terms of being a good art director and a good teacher, it's crucial. It's also an essential skill when it simply comes to being a happy person who enjoys work. I'm talking about the very fine art of giving and receiving feedback. Let's start with giving feedback, which beginning in art school is known as the crit. The first rule of thumb is to be considerate. As with the golden rule, think about how you would like someone to talk to you about your work. Don't roll your eyes, it's true. Assume the person has put their heart and soul into the work, because they probably have. I'm not saying you have to like what they've done by any means, but you have to appreciate that they tried. I'm assuming they tried. If they haven't, you have a whole other issue on your hands, which will have to be addressed in another movie. My favorite method…
