Vertical photo on a horizontal page

Whenever you have a vertical image that needs to fill a horizontal space, but you can't crop the image, you'll need to do some gymnastics. I have a couple of tricks. The problem is this. Vertical image, horizontal space. The only way to actually fill this space is to enlarge the image and crop, but when we do that, we obviously lose the energy of the movement. It changes the communication entirely. So, a work around is to just fill the page with the background color of the image. What this does is reduce the contrast between the image in the background a lot. Feather the edges to soften the transition, and that's it. What's interesting about this is that where before the image was dark in the center of a light page. Now, you can really see the spotlight that's behind the dancer. And he comes right off the page. He's not literally filling the page, but has the effect of a full page with a spotlight on him. A second example is this bridge tower in day light. Again, there's no way to…
