- So a good way to practice basics of composition is just to draw some really simple rectangles or squares onto your page and then you can use these as mini viewfinders to practice different setups with it. So the simplest way to start is just with a dot or a line. Depending on the angle that you choose will vary the intensity or direction of the eye as it comes into the scene. So just by doing these very simple, just one line compositions, you can start to see which would be more harmonious, which would be this one on the left. And which have more drama in it, which would be the one on the right. When I look at a view and thinking about choosing a composition, I initially imagine everything as if it were a line drawing. So notice how the bottom of the landscape has this subtle slope to it. That eases the eye into the view. And then the next mountain range has a steeper angle to it.
