How to frame your view and focal point

When I'm out on location, the first thing I use to frame the view that I'm looking at is an actual viewfinder, and this is just made from card. The black edges of the frame really help to actually frame what I'm looking at, they enable me to see the shapes much more easily. I can then move the viewfinder and change its orientation, and it's really easy to visualize how the scene will appear in the sketchpad. I've got a couple of sizes of different frames that I use, one for a wider view, and one for more of a close-up view. And then once I've got this established just by looking through the viewfinder, I can take a reference shot just on my phone. And if I'm going to be working up the sketch into a painting, I'll also take more images with my camera. With the camera shots, I'll often vary the viewpoint slightly as well.
