Perspective and changing viewpoints

- One of the best ways to create an impressive illusion of depth in your drawings is to use the principles of perspective. One-point perspective is the simplest way to start and will be the most useful when you're out sketching in the landscape. It focuses on one point in the distance, known as the vanishing point. When you're sketching the landscape using the horizon line could be a great reference point to judge scale and distance of objects. And in drawing the landscape I often call the horizon line my eye level. This is because many times the actual horizon line is hidden by a building or trees. So if you just think of it as your eye level that will give you a good indication of where the horizon line will be. So for determining how the perspective is going to work if you first just look at your subject and then decide where your eye level would be. And this is just your first best guess and then lightly draw this onto the paper, just as a horizontal line. Then you can start to…
