Shaping the light in nature

Most of the things around us, no matter how seemingly complicated they're perceived, can actually be broken down into very simple shapes. The complicated shapes are often simple shapes just combine together. We've just seen how the form of the shape can be revealed by the light hitting it, as we saw in this sphere. And on its own, the thought of drawing just a white sphere isn't really that inspiring. But the principles of how light behaves can be transferred from that simple sphere on to many objects. Cezanne said that nature comprises of a sphere, a cone, a cylinder and a cube. And anything that you see could be made up of these simple shapes. What you've got to try and do is imagine these shapes, overlaid on the objects in front of you. Take this example of Cezanne's work and look at how the treatment of light behaves exactly the same.
