- A great exercise to do and it's one that I often do with my own sketches, is to just take the same view, but then to experiment using different mediums. So one can be in pen, one might be in pen and wash, one could be in watercolor, and it can be amazing, just by focusing on that same image, you can see so many different things, depending on the medium that you're using. It can be a quick way to give you a mood and feeling for your drawing, and it's halfway between a sketch and a painting. So you can establish your tonal range, or develop your color palette, in these relatively small sketches. For this lesson, I'm going to be drawing onto a watercolored ground. I've chosen an ultramarine blue as my base color, because this is great, it works as a nice blue for the roof of the house, and also, as a blue for an indication of sky in the background.
