- When drawing trees, the biggest difference is trees without leaves and trees with leaves. And both can make really interesting drawing subjects. But often the first thing I look for if I'm drawing trees with leaves or without leaves is where the light is falling in the actual scene. So here you can see that there's this big cast shadow of light in the foreground. And there's also a shadow on the side of the building. And this just helps to give dimension and form to the view that I'm looking at. But it also gives me an indication of where the light's falling from and how I can use that in my drawing. So you notice on the trees without any leaves the shadows patterns aren't as obvious. I've got the negative spaces in between the branches of trees, but I haven't got any really strong, distinguishable shadows. When we compare it to this view, again we've got this long cast shadow in the foreground. But when we look at the leaves on the trees, the lights and the shadows are really…
