- So the other great thing about acrylics is because they dry so quickly, you can apply them in really thick passages of paint, and you don't have to always use a brush to apply it to your canvas or surface. So what I want to show you now is how I apply the paint for some of my more abstract pieces, working directly onto a board or canvas, and then scraping the paint back, but not using a brush, using things you'd find in a builder's trade, so could be for a float, or it could be something you'd use for filling in the walls. But it can be so handy just to manipulate the paint around. So what I've got here is just a board that's got a black gesso applied to it, so I can just work straight on top. And this is where you can just take your tubes and just go straight out onto it. And you can start to use the viscosity of the paint, some of these thinner paints are dripping down, and they're going to be perfect for this style of technique.
