Earth colors vs. synthetic colors

- What I'd like to do now is break down the painting into the three stages of the painting's progress, looking specifically at the pigments that I used, and why I chose them for that stage of the painting. You'll understand the different brightnesses of hues, and how the pigments sit within a historical context. In the first stages I've used a yellow ochre and burnt umber, and that stage of the painting is very muted and earthy. And here we concentrated on a wide tonal range, and the drawing of the scene. This reflects a more traditional old master palette, and how they built up the painting in layers, from the darkest darks and subtle layers of earth color. The variety in the painting was achieved through dramatic lighting and strong drawing and composition. The pigments came from the earth, literally ground-up rocks, and hence the muted palette being called the "earth colors." The second stage use pigments that have a mineral base to them.
