Placing an object in front of another object to occlude parts of the geometry is another way that depth is suggested. Casting shadows indicates that an object is sitting on a flat surface like a table or floor, but we could just as easily sketch a single line behind the object occluded by the object to suggest the edge of a table in the far off distance. This both grounds the object and creates the depth cue, the back edge of a table in the distance.
