- Let's touch briefly on two more ways to look at cropping. The "stickout" crop is where a part of a picture extends beyond the edge of the frame. It has two great qualities. One, is that it gets the object out of its box. We don't experience the world at rectangles like a camera does. And although there's still a rectangle here, these books now have dimension and life, like they're actually on the page. The stickout crop is a focusing device. A storytelling device. A dolphin's beautiful! But watch this. Crop him to the space, leave white on both ends for continuity, like our surfer's wave, then add a soft crop to one side, and a stickout crop to the other. And the dimensional result is remarkable. It's like he's jumping right off the sign and interacting with the words. That's the kind of focus that a stickout can help you achieve. Finally, the false crop is where you don't cut the picture but just cover up part of it. This is a common print technique for booklets, brochures…
