Cropping from the middle

- Split crops. I like split crops. A split crop is what you use when the unwanted portion of your photo is not on the edge, but in the middle. Like this. All you do is slice and strip out the center, and in this case push the halves apart like this. This doctors the scene, so you don't wanna do that with news photography, but here it doesn't matter. Between the halves add a color panel. This one is sand colored and textured. Texture is something you can make in Photoshop. The idea is to give it the feel of sand without looking like sand. Texture is an easy low-key way to tie a graphic to a photo. Finish by putting a slight shadow on the panel to lift it off the page. And add the text. It's really a beautiful way to make lemonade out of lemons, and it's just a great effect any time. You don't have to have something wrong with the middle. Cropping's not gonna fix bad lighting, weak camera angles, out of focus images. You can't make a truly poor picture good, but your job is to make it…
