Blue Note: Caddy Daddy, Part 1

- Graphic design is in many ways like jazz, jazz music, in that it has structure, sometimes complex structure, and improvisation. Without structure, you'd just be plinking on the keys. Without improvisation, you couldn't respond to the moment. With design, to the moment means what's happening on the page. What are the lines of force, where's the energy concentrating, and so on. And do you amplify that? Do you quiet it? Do you harmonize with it? Last time we ended on this album cover talking about sight lines and how every image has them and how the designer interacted with them. I'd like to step that up this time looking at a similar cover. Briefly, if you missed last time, in the late 1950s, early '60s, designer Reed Miles at Blue Note Records created a look for jazz music that's influential even today.
