- Jazz music in the late 1950s and '60s had a visual style popularized by Blue Note records that remains influential to this day. It was the work of designer Reid Miles, and it's characterized by two things primarily, bold typographic arrangements, like midnight blue, and the use of white space as a major design element. Classic example, black and white photo, extremely condensed type, magenta and yellow as the highlight, huge white space. This is cool, it's just chill. It sucks you in and it's like, how did he do that? Starts with a great photo. This is also Reid Miles work. Everything about this is bold. Huge headlight in the foreground, like in your face huge, artist in the background. This is called reverse scale. The small things big, the big things small, you do that to dramatize.
