- [Nigel] Welcome to "Type Tips," I'm Nigel French. This week I'm going to talk about making an environmental alphabet. This is a Pinterest board of examples that I've gathered. Once you start looking for type in your environment you'll see letter shapes everywhere. With a camera, some careful cropping and some basic digital darkroom techniques you can tease out letter shapes from just about anything, compiling them into complete alphabets. Now this project is a slow simmer, this isn't going to happen fast. What I suggest you do is in Lightroom or Bridge, or wherever it is you gather together your images, you make yourself a collection and let these images accumulate over a period of time while you're working on other projects. When you reach a critical mass of having almost as many letters as you need you can then go out and make a more targeted search for those that remain.
