Create paragraph styles - InDesign Tutorial

- [Instructor] It's finally time to learn how to style our text. Select and double click on the first paragraph to highlight the line of text. Head to the character options inside the properties panel, click on the down pointing arrow to open the font list. For this document, I will use a font family named Abril Fatface and set it to regular. From this panel, you can also change the font size. Font size is measured in points. I will set my text size to 18 points. Bearing in mind the importance of accessibility, try to keep any relevant information above 16 points. Change size by clicking on the top and bottom arrows located next to the size field, or simply by inputting the number directly into the field. From here, let's also set the leading, which is the space between each line. I will set it to 21 points. Give also color to your text by scrolling up inside the properties panel until you find the appearance options. Click on the fill icon to assign a color of your choice. I will open the theme folder we have created in chapter two, video number three, and then select one of the color from the theme. Once we're happy with the styling, let's save them into a paragraph style. To create a new paragraph style, click on the little plus icon located under the text style options. Make sure, first, that the paragraph tab is selected. Label your paragraph style depending on the content you're working with, like title or body copy. I will name this paragraph style Advert Copy, then press Enter to save it. You can edit your paragraph style formatting at any time by accessing the paragraph styles panel. Click on the P icon under text style options to open the panel, or you can also locate it by choosing the window menu and selecting styles, then paragraph styles. To edit a paragraph style, double click on the style that you wish to edit, then click on Preview in order to see the changes applied live on your text. In this panel, you will find many formatting options that will allow you great control over your text style. I will start by heading to the hyphenation tab to deactivate hyphenation. Then, I will change the color to blue by accessing the color tab and choosing a color from the color theme. When done with editing, click on okay to commit to the changes. InDesign allows you to create multiple paragraph styles in each of your documents. Let's style the remaining text with a different style and using a different technique. This time, we will start from the paragraph style panel. Select the line of text to which you wish to apply the new style, and then click on the little plus icon under the paragraph style panel to create a new style. Double click on the new style. It's important to name your style to keep organized. I will label this second style Body Copy. Now, let's select a font family from the basic character formats tab. I will use Acumin. Also from here, select the text size. When using multiple paragraph styles, it's important to set a consistent space between paragraphs to organize your content groups by proximity or distance. Select the indents and spacing tab to access its options. In this case, I will only add some space before to create the distance between the previous paragraph style and the current one. In fact, space before will add a gap between paragraphs with different styles. I will set the space to three millimeters. Then, I will head to the character color and set the color to green, belonging to the color theme. Press okay to accept changes. Let's move on to the next step.
