- Addressing structural racism is not merely an opportunity for design to change the world. It's an opportunity for design to change itself. As a white man in design, it never occurred to me that there was a color issue in the design history I was taught, the hiring practices that helped me get my first job, or the glossy images of white people leading a group of darker skinned people in human-centered design. In each of these instances, I was in the privileged position of believing the work I was doing was perfectly suited for people like me. There was an implicit sense of belonging for me, a white man steeped in Bauhaus principles that strive for one universal language. If design is so enthralled with empathy, we have to ask ourselves how we've missed its direct application to our own professional standards for so long. Robin DiAngelo in her book White Fragility makes this observation about skin color in Western society.…
