Design contributions to social innovation

- As we come to the end of this first section of the course, it's a great time to take a peek at how designers themselves have contributed to the theories and practice of social innovation. For example, Ezio Manzini has been a design pioneer in this space for decades. Manzini created a framework called SLOC, or small, local, open, and connected. This framework highlights the virtuous interaction between social and technical innovation by aligning the most vibrant aspects of human scale networks with the transformative aspects of global connectivity. In this way, concepts of community wellbeing can simultaneously be deeper, or a small and local, and broader, or open and connected. Placing these four concepts on a circular diagram reveals how focusing on both the depth and breadth in human relationships cultivates a holistic approach to social innovation.
