Doors

- If this is only true of me, I'll take it. But, I think designers are generally more observant than others. And sometimes, that can get us into trouble. If told not to stare at someone's ears, I can assure you designers will not only stare but they may try to document it as well. To be the catalogers of visual reference, we seldom avert our eyes. On evening walks, my wife used to admonish me that, if a neighbor's curtains weren't drawn and you could see them in their home, don't wave. - [NARRATOR] This last trend is doors but, windows could be in here too. And, I think my theories relate to both. Doors have been used in logos as a favorite analogy for years. They serve as a passage or an invitation. They can be a symbol of welcome or a symbol of denial depending on the door. A square with a pitched roof on it is just a pentagon until you draw a door. My logo fancies have been answered though. Someone threw the doors wide open and, focused on the other side. Portals to another world or time, or a least another frame of mind have become a literal manifestation in this years trends. Doors and windows allow us the ability to peer into that other dimension while staying firmly rooted to the here and now. They serve to invite us to a become a voyeur or participant and, it's just that invitation that is so alluring with this theme. There is a certain amount of fantasies associated with what's outside or inside the opening. On this logo for Haywood Street, I wouldn't have given it a second glance had the artist not part the scene just beyond these three open doors. They literally set the scene, and let you know that it actually is a place. It's a great illustration and, does the work it should for the client but, the genius that makes you look are the doors. Doors and windows have long been powerful agents to sell an analogy. Doors signify a right of passage or a pathway to a solution, an opportunity, or a sign, or a greeting. Windows, in much the same way are considered eyes that allow you see into another's soul or another world. They serve as connectivity between the here and there. If you have a client with a less literal visual objective, a passage can be equally as effective in metaphorical manifestation. I hope I've opened up a portal you too can use, as a way to convey and idea that's a bit more conceptual. I hope this gives you clearer vision, and new opportunities as you think about looking through doors. But, don't wave.
