Empathy in the public space

- This subject is much bigger than design. There's a lack of empathy in society at large. Consider Rock Hudson. He was a famous beloved actor. About three years into the AIDS crisis, he was diagnosed with AIDS and went public about it, when most people were not going public. He died the following year, but before he died in 1985, almost 17,000 people had been diagnosed and half had already died. This was an 89% increase over the previous year. The things changed when Rock Hudson went public because maybe we didn't actually know anyone else who had AIDS and now we felt like we did. When there was no face, no beloved person attached to the disease, the public and the government at large ignored it. This displays a horrible lack of empathy. Do we have to personally know someone who's in danger before we care? By being an empathetic victim, someone we already felt we loved, Rock Hudson changed many people's perspective…
