- An efficient way to gain an understanding of your customers is to start by defining what you hope to learn. This can be established by anchoring your testing with the problem statement you defined from the second phase of design thinking, the define phase. Let's revisit that. As the second step in the design thinking process, the define phase is where you'll establish a clear idea of exactly which problem you're trying to solve for the user. You'll then shape this into a problem statement which will act as your North Star throughout the design process. And to recap, a problem statement identifies the problem or gap between the current or desired state and the goal of a process or product. Now ask yourself, based on the problem statement, what is the one thing you hope to learn at this point? That one thing at this stage that would give you the understanding you need to further refine.
