Leverage points in complex systems
- Donella Meadows, an environmental scientist and writer who's had tremendous influence on systems thinkers. Identified a series of leverage points to address dysfunctions and complex social systems like homelessness and economic inequality. Let's look at our top six in order of increasing leverage. Access to and control over information flows. Who has access to information and what are their intentions? How might we make information flows more transparent and accessible. Setting or changing the rules. Who makes them, who benefits from them and how might we alter the rules to reduce undesired outcomes and enhance things like public health, equity and social justice. The ability to self-organize, how can social norms evolve in response to changing conditions? How do we adapt to new information?
