- Badges is a graphic device that pretty much developed popularity based off of a long-standing tradition of the crest of a family coat of arms. These, of course, are an amalgam of words, mottos, dates, heraldry, lions, tigers, and emus or whatever colors and critters float your tribe. There are literally historic manuals that give explicit directions on the design of a coat of arms, and though I'd be hard-pressed to put my hands on a copy, I can assure you there's a strong DNA tie between the elements and their use today and a half a dozen centuries ago. All the more reason I'm enthused to find a new way to shove all of those components into a mark with a pretty tight dance floor, for in the past badges, the diversive components needed breathing room for legibility.
