- [Nigel] Hi I'm Nigel French. Welcome to Type Tips. In this week's episode, I'd like to talk about mono spaced fonts. Mono spaced fonts are those where each character occupies the same width so that you can stack them up vertically like this. If you're choosing mono spaced fonts you can filter your font menu just to see those mono spaced fonts that you have installed. If you're browsing fonts on Type Kit you can browse just for mono spaced fonts. Even though you may be working with a proportional spaced font the default figure style for most type faces is lining numbers which are mono spaced. So that they vertically align in tables. Mono spaced fonts are used in programming text books to set the code. Because each character is distinct, there's no ambiguity between the characters.
