Pure perception

- Sometimes when we try too hard to see something or we effort too hard to create something, we actually block our ability to connect with our subject. I had this experience a while ago where I was teaching a college-level painting class, a still life painting class, and for weeks I was trying to get the students to see the color in cast shadows. And for weeks and weeks, it was just very frustrating for them and frustrating for me to really effort around seeing shadows could be different colors. So one day I came home from a long day of teaching trying to get people to see the color in shadows and I walked into my kitchen and on the white kitchen table there were a bunch of lemons and my then four-year-old daughter Celeste came running out to give me a hug and she said, "Mama, can't you see?
