- Photography, in and of itself, is an incredible art form. Many people use photos as source material for their drawings and paintings. I have nothing against using photos for inspiration. But just reproducing a photo in another media can sometimes feel flat and technical. It usually leaves me asking the question what else can I do with this picture? How can I mix things up a bit and make something that transcends the photograph, that isn't just a mere copy of it? One of my favorite ways to elevate a photograph's potential as source material is cutting it up and rearranging it to make a new image. In the studio, I really enjoy arranging aspects of images into grids. The surrealists called this grid technique Cubomania. I like to use a photo I've taken myself, but you can find an image anywhere. A square is a shape that's easy to rearrange and associate with itself. So I often choose a square photo and cut it into…
