- Information overload, distractions from notifications and busy multitasking are external creativity colors that dampen brain activity and block the formation of new ideas. Notifications are especially compelling. Every time our phone vibrates, jingles, rings or otherwise begs for our attention, we feel a little rush of excitement that feels like adrenaline. Well, it turns out that we're actually hooked on the squirt of dopamine that we get in our brains whenever we hear an alert. Similarly, if the phone is quiet for long periods of time, we suffer from actual mild withdrawal symptoms. This is communication addiction and it comes from our hyperconnectivity. It's a major source of our impaired thinking and problem solving and our inability to easily access our creativity.
