- The other day, this headline caught my eye. "Generation Z feels intimidated by full stops," experts find." The story goes on to explain that when used in the context of text messages, social media, and sometimes email, Gen Z views full stops, AKA periods, as blunt, insincere, or a sign of annoyance. Of course, gen Z is the first generation to have grown up with the internet, smartphones, and social media as the normal, rather than the exception. As native digital communicators, they're used to connecting with one another over short form text, sending their thoughts one message at a time, rather than using punctuation to contextualize the conclusion of those thoughts. But, the linguists reporting on this finding stop their logic there. With the understanding that Gen Z is simply used to communicating in succinct statements.
