- When we're stuck in a creative rut, nothing seems inspiring. Often what's happening is that we've lost our ability to recognize the new or to see the old with a fresh perspective. Novelty, or the quality of being new or original, is one of the things that drives attention and focus. And attention and focus determines what we think about. What we think about not only takes up the lion share of our brain power, but also causes our brains to expand in the active regions, so when nothing seems novel enough to capture our attention, of course our creative thinking will feel stunted. In order to rejuvenate our creative spark, we need to consciously snap ourselves out of the jaded, been there, done that, and seen that mind frame, and return to a place of childlike wonder at the world around us. The shift in perspective will come from tapping into our capacity for mindfulness and intentionally directing our focus and thoughts.…
