Structural racism and design

- As a White man in America, while I may not be able to pinpoint moments in my life where my privileged status allowed me to advance, I acknowledge these moments have occurred. They've created opportunities for me that others have been denied, simply because of our skin color. Structural racism is a result of historical forces that have created a system of exclusion that perpetuates racial inequality in all facets of life. In the US for example, the result is disparity in the rates of high school graduation, career preparedness, mortgage approval, infant mortality, poverty and life expectancy, just to name a few. So designers interested in social innovation have to do their homework. And thankfully, we have inspiring role models.
