- Another way of looking at the capabilities approach is through Martha Nussbaum's list of ten central capabilities. Nussbaum describes this list as her best attempt to identify the most essential capabilities. Number one, life, not dying prematurely or before one's life is so reduced as to be not worth living. Bodily health, having good health and being adequately nourished and sheltered. Bodily integrity, being secure against violent assault. Senses, imagination, and thought, being able to use the senses to imagine think and reason in a way that's informed and cultivated by an adequate education. Emotions, being able to have attachments to things and people outside of ourselves, not having one's emotional development blighted by fear.
