Understanding ideation during the creative process
- Ideation is the step of the process that most of us jump straight to when we're presented with a problem. It's the part of the process that solves the problem, so we innately want to get there as fast as possible. But each step that comes before ensures that this step is of the most value. This is the idea step of the process. The goal of this step is to generate as many possibilities as you can. Notice I didn't say solutions; I said possibilities. Step five of the process will help us identify solutions. This step is to get down as many possibilities as you can, even if those possibilities aren't complete or hit the mark perfectly. There are a number of techniques you can employ for this step to help you generate as many ideas as possible. You can use a connection exercise, like idea webs, to find connections between differing concepts by expanding a web of associated words around a subject of your ideation. Or you…
